“Things I Learned while Enjoying a Career in Design, Construction,
Research and Education”
Abstract:
Common threads connecting many facets of a professional career include the care
and nurturing of ideas, making choices, sharing the load, appreciating others while
accepting criticism, and facing difficulties and unfairness while acting ethically.
Biography:
Ken Hover is a Professor Emeritus of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Weiss
Presidential Fellow at Cornell University. He earned BSCE and MSCE degrees at the
University of Cincinnati, and the PhD in Structural Engineering at Cornell.
Ken’s career started with a general contractor, then military service, then a partner
and manager of a structural design firm. In mid-career, the Exxon Foundation
funded his PhD studies at Cornell University with the goal of bringing experienced,
licensed engineers to the faculty of US Colleges of Engineering.
Staying at Cornell, Ken taught and pursued research in reinforced and prestressed
concrete design, concrete materials, construction management, and management
practice. Ken is Past-President and Honorary Member of ACI, Distinguished Member
of ASCE, and Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Concrete Technology in the UK. He
is a licensed professional engineer in Ohio and New York. Ken has been named “One
of the 10 most influential people in the US concrete industry.” Since July, 2021, Ken
has been a Co-Leader of the materials-science team for the U.S. Government
investigation of the partial collapse of Champlain Towers South in Surfside, Florida.
