Nov. 8 marks First Generation Day, as part of the University of Florida’s First-Generation college students’ weeklong celebration. This was selected as the date for the annual National First-Generation College Celebration to honor the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965. The Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure & Environment (ESSIE) worked on a series of interviews for a few first-generation students.
Anthony Perez Ortegon is a first-gen college student and a civil engineering junior. His journey is about determination and growth. He’s not only made the Dean’s List but is already working on his Master’s in Structural Engineering. His passion extends to the UF Eckhoff Steel Bridge team team, where he’s gone from a team member to Administrative Lead and now Project Manager.
Fabiana Janeth Gonzalez is an environmental engineering junior on a mission to protect the environment from climate change. Her journey started with environmental activism in Miami and led her to UF.
Donald Stowell-Moore is civil engineering senior who turned his YouTube education into a passion for science and engineering. He’s been part of the UF Eckhoff Steel Bridge Team, helping them secure two National Championships!
